Assistant Orchestra Director

Responsible for working with the Orchestra Director to select the orchestra, organizing all personnel for the various performances and rehearsals.  The Assistant can be a musician performing for the show. Ideally, if needed and if qualified, the Assistant can serve as Conductor.  This position could be considered an Internship for the Orchestra Director role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with selection of orchestra members.
  • Maintain an official (Google) shared spreadsheet of the show’s musician’s names, contacts, instruments and schedules.
  • Ensure that each performance will be adequately staffed with orchestra members.  Be aware of instrumentation requirements.
  • Make and distribute pdf files of musician books to all orchestra personnel.  Include links to recordings and show-specific information.
  • While the instrumentalists are primarily responsible for separating/transposing their own books when necessary, the AOD can assist with musical part logistics when musicians share performances and/or share books between instruments (reed books, in particular).
  • Assist the Conductor, Sound Designer and Vocal Director with balance issues when microphones and/or monitors are used in the pit.
  • Attend auditions, production meetings and rehearsals as needed.
  • Keep a record of performance services for each orchestra member. Supply this record to OTP’s Business Manager at the end of the run.
  • Ensure musicians understand and sign a Musician Contract and complete a W-9.
  • Ideally, and if able, conduct several rehearsals, several performances, and serve as substitute Orchestra Director should the need arise.
