Audiences Rave About ATP's Birdbath and Madame La Gimp!
Audiences were in for a special treat with the Aged To Perfection’s readers theatre productions of Birdbath and Madame La Gimp. The April 4-6 performances certainly earned a rave response.
Birdbath, performed by Cathy Louis and Michael Spry, is a one act play penned by Leonard Melfi. It deals with two relative strangers who come together one evening under unusual circumstances and is a story which plays out to a rather dramatic conclusion.
Director Phil Murphy commented, "As part of ATP's more recent efforts to grow our skills, I purposely selected a piece that would stretch the actors outside of their usual comfort zones and provide a level of experience that goes well beyond what our audience has seen from ATP in the past.”
Shelley Spencer, a member of the group’s Steering Committee, expressed, “I was so impressed with the way that the two actors read from their scripts while fully taking on the personas of their characters. This extended the performance well beyond a simple dramatic reading. It was outstanding.”
Following Birdbath, the mood shifted from drama and intrigue to humor and laughter with the performance of Damon Runyon’s Madame La Gimp. The story portrayed how a group of New Yorkers come to the aid of an elderly woman while trying to impress her daughter’s future in-laws.
Director Karen McCosky said that this one-act comedy, “provided a perfectly refreshing counterpoint with its offbeat characterizations and quirky plot. It was great that we could leave the audience laughing.”
