Indecent - Paula Vogel's Haunting Drama of Artists Who Risk Everything

By Paula Vogel

Directed by Debbie Hershey

A play with music, Indecent tells the story of Sholem Asch’s 1907 controversial Yiddish play,
The God of Vengeance, and the passionate artists who risked everything to bring it to the stage. The story—about the daughter of a brothel owner who falls in love with one of her father’s prostitutes—rose to great success in Europe, but when an English-translation was attempted on Broadway in 1923, the play proved too scandalous and the cast was charged with obscenity. Indecent resurrects Asch’s great play, and celebrates the love, magic and hope of the theatre even in the face of the greatest adversities.
